King of Fighters XII Review

Here is my review of King of Fighters XII for the Xhox 360.

I’ve been a big fan of King of Fighters and other SNK games since the days of the Neo Geo arcade machines. I remember playing King of Fighters back in the mid 90’s in arcades and I loved it. MAME has also kept my interest in this series alive. I was excited when they announced a new KoF game. Unfortunately this game does not deliver. In a year with excellent fighters like Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue and Marvel VS Capcom 2 it just does not feel like it is worth the $59 price tag.

The graphics and animations are beauitifully hand-drawn and look amazing. The art style has always been a staple in the KoF series and it delivers on this aspect in KoF XII. The backgrounds are also nice to look at.

The gameplay is what you’d expect from a fighting game. The fighting system is actually pretty good and the controls feel responsive in this aspect. However there are too many flaws in presentation that take away from this experience. First there is no story mode. There is also no time attack mode or survival mode either. These two modes have become staples in the console versions of many fighting games and why they wouldn’t be included in beyond me. There is an arcade mode but it is way too short. The lack of modes and short arcade mode take the replayability of this game to a very low point. There is online play but as of right now the lag issues make it almost unplayable. I’m sure they can fix this with an update but when the only aspect of your game that can add to the replay value is so broken right off the bat that is not a good thing.

It is a shame that such a great fighting franchise has come to this. The gameplay is solid but there is just not enough here to warrant a purchase. It would make sense if this was a budget title but this is a retail game costing $59.99 at retail. To me that is highway robbery for the amount of content the game does offer, which is very little in terms of replayability. Your best bet is to wait for a huge price drop or get Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, or Marvel VS Capcom 2 over KoF XII.

  • Solid fighting system
  • Beautiful hand-drawn characters and backgrounds

  • No modes besides Arcade and Versus
  • Online play is nearly unplayable due to lag issues
  • $59.99 price tag
  • Not enough content to warrant a purchase at full price.
